Fallas are the best known festivals in Valencian Community. They are celebrated from 15th until 19th March in many towns of the Valencian territory, although they are original from the city of Valencia. According to the story, Fallas started several centuries ago when the carpenters of the city of Valencia, on the eve of the day of their patron Saint Joseph (19th of March) by tradition burned in front of their workshops or in the squares wooden contraptions and useless junk. The objects that were burned have evolved to become works of art of wood or cardboard, among other materials, tinged with irony and criticism of social and political life.
Fallas are a mixture of tradition, gunpowder, art, fire, party, color, noise ... Although there are events since the end of February, la "Semana Fallera" begins on 15th March with "La Plantà", when more than 700 Fallas of the city of Valencia must be completely finished, following the 17th and 18th of March with the floral offering to the Virgen of Desamparados and ending on the 19th with "La Cremà" where all these works of art burn until they are reduced to ashes. All this accompanied by the daily visit to the mascletà and the fireworks that are held at midnight, as well as tasting pumpkin fritters with hot chocolate.
Fallas are an emotional and unique celebrations, and these characteristics made them to be declared Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2016.
Although Valencia is the original city of Fallas and the one that has the most monuments, we can find Fallas in 90 more towns of the Valencian territory as, for example, in Dénia, Gandía, Alzira, Xàtiva or Sagunt. The majority of towns near Valencia celebrate Fallas, although we can also find them in towns of the province of Castellón and Alicante.
